I consider Narashino to be perhaps the best field performance band in Japan. Every year they present a new and difficult program based on a national theme. 2019 Russian program won them a well won Gold Star. All field performance are precise and musically superb. So imagine my surprise to see them in parades - it doesn't matter if you march in step or even play. Smiling and waving are just as important as playing. There are times where only one member of a section is playing - the rest smile and wave. One trumpet player seemed to never put the horn to her lips but she was a great smiling, waving singer. And still they sound fine. I'm gonna tell you - - - I like this! My guess is that it is a relief from the preciseness of field performance. I know that because of Covid-19, all is quiet in Japanese bands - but they will be back and so will Narashino - perfect on the field, marching out of step, smiling, waving and singing in parades.
